Google Drive Ownership Transfer

Graham CaparuloKnowledge Base

The mechanism to provide file access to an offboarded Google account to another Google account is called ‘Ownership Transfer’.

Transferring ownership of Google Drive data will make the new account the owner of the data.  When the ownership transfer is complete, the new owners’ account will have a new folder called Transfer Folder containing the data.

Please note that transferring ownership can happen multiple times, which creates an ownership transfer chain.

Example:

John Doe is leaving the company, and you would like Jane Smith to have access to John’s files.  We will transfer ownership of John’s Drive data to Jane.

Now Jane Smith leaves the company, and you would like Donnie Darko to have access to Jane’s files.  We will again do an ownership transfer of Jane’s Drive data to Donnie.

Note: In additional to Jane’s files, Donnie now also has access to John Doe’s files.

John Doe (original owner) -> Jane Smith (new owner) -> Donnie Darko (newest owner) = Donnie now has the history transfer chain.  He is now the owner of Jane and John’s files.
